Counselling Staff

Principal Counsellor

Julie Erskine, BA (Hons), M Psych, PhD UNSW, MAPS, AACBT

I am a Clinical Psychologist and hold memberships of The Australian Psychological Society, the College of Clinical Psychologists and The Australian Association of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Since 1990, I have been working in University Counselling services, other areas of employment have been in Community Health. I have also worked as a sole practitioner in private practice.

My training and experience is in the area of cognitive behaviour therapy, which is an appropriate and effective orientation in a university counselling service, which offers short-term intervention to its clients. I help people to assess and manage more effectively the interactive effects of their thoughts, emotions and behaviours. While clients present with many different concerns, counselling aims to assist them to reach their personal and professional potential. My role also includes consultation and involvement with other services and academic units within the university.

While my primary role as a clinical psychologist is in assisting clients who are experiencing difficulties, particularly of a clinical nature, I have had extensive experience in the area of transition and adjustment to tertiary education and the university experience. The supervision of psychology interns and professional development are activities in which I am continuously involved. I am particularly interested in developing the profile and range of professional services offered by The Counselling Service to the University community.

I have been working as a generalist counsellor at Macquarie University since early 1994. Prior to that I worked in different counselling settings including many years in the public health system (hospitals, community health etc.) and in private practice.

In my work, I aim to assist people to see themselves in a positive light and to feel they have control in their lives. I try to work in practical ways through listening, helping people to reframe their situations where possible and identifying and refining the strengths and resources they have which might lead to change.

I have a number of particular areas of interest including Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, Hypnosis, relaxation training and anxiety management. I am also interested in grief, trauma survival, relationship issues, depression, the enhancement of self-esteem and personal growth generally.

Counsellor (P/T)

John Machlin,  BSc (Hons), MPsych WA, MAPS

I am a clinical psychologist, and have been working with the students and staff of Macquarie University on a part-time basis since 2000. I work primarily from a cognitive-behavioural perspective, helping people to examine their thoughts, feelings and behaviours with a view to therapeutic change. I see counselling as a collaborative process, always with a shared understanding of what the goals are and how they might be reached.

I trained at the University of Western Australia, and have since provided clinical services within a range of health, justice, rehabilitative and educational settings in Australia and the UK. I continue to provide treatment services within the broader community, and maintain longstanding interests in clincal aspects of criminal offending and workplace injury.
