Mental Health Support Group
Counsellor: Robert Wickenden
Email: robert.wickenden@mq.edu.au
The aim of this group will be to provide support to undergraduate and postgraduate students who have experienced, or who may be currently experiencing a psychiatric disability.
Schizophrenic disorders, bipolar affective disorders and other significant mental health problems can certainly make progress in University studies more difficult. Students experiencing such problems may at times feel isolated, stigmatised and depressed as they pursue their studies at University. Issues to be addressed include:
- Do I disclose?
- What does my illness mean to me?
- How do I deal with other peoples reactions?
- What triggers my illness?
- Professional management and self management
- Self esteem
- Planning my studies
- Practical support on and off campus
The group will be conducted over three sessions, initially. There may be provision for it to be extended. There will be strict confidentiality requirements.
